Ironmen are fine-tuned machines requiring constant, dedicated and specific attention to keep them running smoothly. The well-oiled cogs have been turning in the minds of our medical and scientific experts and they’ll be discussing and inspecting the best of the best at Ironman Australia, 2010.

The Medicine in Motion 2010 medical conference will be held in Port Macquarie during Ironman Week, on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th March. The focus of the conference is on medical and health matters affecting endurance athletes.

Conference organisers, Dr Bill Lancashire (five-time Ironman) and Sue Carroll (a former Director on the Port Macquarie Ironman Local Organising Committee), have put together an excellent program for the two days.

The conference is open to anyone, although it is aimed mainly at health professionals. Speakers for the conference include both local and visiting medical specialists, many of whom are endurance athletes themselves. There are sixteen Ironman titles between the speakers, plus distance runners and a distance swimmer. Topics for the two day conference include:

• Fluid and electrolytes in an Ironman

• Eyes and sport

• The guts of an Ironman

• The female athlete

• The role of supplements before and after the race

• Ironman case presentations

• The older athlete
