Olympic bronze medallist claims her third Australian title

Emma Moffatt claimed the Australian Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships title in Geelong on Sunday.

The athlete, who has already been pre-selected for the London Olympic Games, started in style, leading the women out of the 750 metre swim leg.

Teresa Adam of New Zealand and Sarrisa de Vries of the Netherlands were hot on her heels, but during the bike leg the Dutch athlete was dropped early as Moffat and Adam battled for the lead.

They opened up a 50 second gap to the chasing pack, which became nearly a minute and half by the end of the 20 kilometre circuit and the transition to the 5 kilometre run.

Moffatt immediately gapped the New Zealander, who was starting to flag in the trying conditions.

Moffat went on to claim her third Geelong title and the Australian Sprint Championship in 1 hour, 1 minute and 35 seconds.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Laurent Vidal grabbed gold in the men’s event, putting several local favourites out of the placings in what was one of closest finishes in recent times.
