Sports Dieticians Australia to host free sports nutrition lecture at Melbourne's federation square.

Should you eat before exercise? Why is water only appropriate for up to one hour of activity? Do active children need sports

drinks?

The role of nutrition in all levels of sport – from amateur to professional – has come a long way since the days when Tour de
France cyclists would stop for a cigarette to ‘relax their lungs.’

Contributing to some of the major myth-busting and revolutionary thinking around how we should approach food and exercise,
the Sports Dietitians of Australia (SDA) will hold a rare, free public lecture and informal Q&A session on the journey of sports
nutrition.

With sports-loving Melburnians gearing up for an active spring and summer, and with over 28 per cent* of the population over
15yrs now exercising five times or more a week, the SDA public lecture promises to be an incredibly insightful, surprising and
provoking look at why correct sports nutrition has become a critical component to any level of exercise.

Accredited Practicing Dietitian, former nutrition adviser to the West Coast Eagles (AFL), Perth Wildcats (NBL) and the Western
Force (Rugby), and founding SDA member Glenn Cardwell will lead this extraordinary sharing of information.

"There is a real danger in a one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition in sport. There are differences between men and women,
between football and swimming, and between a 40 minute walk and a triathlon,” said Cardwell.

“Add to this, there is a huge level of confusion among active Australians. Do I take water or a sports drink, or even an energy
drink? Do I eat a banana or a gel during an event? Can I drink too much? And what about all those sports bars? All these
questions demonstrate why sports dietitians have become integral in every professional sport on the planet,” he said.

Glenn Cardwell, who has over 30 years of clinical and public health nutritional expertise, together with Australia’s leading sports
dietitians, will spend time debunking myths, sharing their knowledge and personally answering questions from the audience
during lecture.

The lecture will also highlight the incredible advances in sports nutrition over the last two decades, and provide a rare
opportunity to get some practical tips.
