Protecting your noggin on the road today is serious business. Gone are days of the StakHat and orange flags. We show you what to look for when buying your next helmet.

Aero, full-faced or standard?

The fast, slick-looking teardrop helmets are made to be aerodynamic. They can shave minutes off your ride time for long distance events. Manufacturers are now including vents in the design as it can get pretty hot under there and cause over-heating and problems for some athletes.

Most athletes will be after a standard helmet designed to absorb the initial impact to the head in a crash.

Australian Government safety standards apply to any helmet sold today – it’s the law. So, when you are using your helmet properly, it will do its job in a crash and protect your head as much as possible. Safety assured in the design, you are now shopping for style and comfort in the helmet store!

Your helmet should be light and feel comfortable on your head. It’s important your helmet fits snugly on our head, even when unbuckled and cover half your forehead – a poor fit is unsafe. Check the fit by getting your buddy to put their hand on the helmet you’re wearing and push back. If it slides back, it doesn’t fit. If your whole head moves, you’re good to go.  Always replace your helmet if it has any body damage.
